Meeting, Exceeding, and Resetting Expectations

Meeting, Exceeding, and Resetting Expectations

I find it interesting that we set expectations for almost every aspect of our lives, whether we realize it or not.  From how we will look, to the kind of car we want to drive, and to what it will feel like when we drive it.  We set expectations for virtually everything, including the people around us.  The problem arises when the real world falls short of those expectations, and feelings of disappointment are left over.

I often have conversations with myself.  Not in a "he's delusional" kind of way, but more so in a "he checks on himself first, before anyone else does" kind of way.  After all, who knows me better than me, and who knows you better than you?  I ask myself, are the expectations I've set for myself realistic?  Are the expectations I've set for my friends and other people around me realistic? Are they fair? Even when the answer to all of these questions is yes, my reality still may not align with the expectations I have set for myself and other people.

What used to leave me frustrated has now lead me to one comprehensive conclusion, which is that I should spend the majority of my time concerned about the expectations I have set for myself, because I have no control over what other people do.  When I don't meet my expectations, I head back to the drawing board to think about what I did incorrectly, or better yet, what I can do differently.  When other people don't meet my expectations, I stop expecting things from them.  I shift my mindset to figuring out how I can meet that same goal by myself.

What do you do when you don't meet your own expectations?
